OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Melinda Liu, Irvine City Council District 1 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Public safety is becoming a concern for residents as the city grows. District 1 is close to a high fire danger zone, and it is my priority to keep our homes and families safe from dangerous wildfires. As the endorsed candidate by OC Professional Firefighters, I will continue to ensure we have adequate equipment and emergency plans. I will also work with all public safety agencies to make sure they’re meeting the needs of the residents and continuing to build a strong relationship with the community.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: For the last 20 years, I’ve been a grassroots activist and community leader in my neighborhood advocating for immigrants, working parents, women of color and residents who care for their aging parents — in other words, people like me. I’ve lived the life of an Irvine resident juggling work and family, caring for parents and raising children. I understand the needs of our community after working with other parents who share the same concerns. As a woman of color and 1.5 gen immigrant, I will work to keep Irvine a well-integrated and diverse community to promote diversity, equity and inclusion.https://irvinewatchdog.org/featured/a-first-look-into-campaign-donations-for-each-city-council

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Michelle Johnson, Irvine City Council District 1 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The largest issues facing District 1 in Irvine are:– The final development of 1,300 homes and the resulting impact on our schools and traffic,
– The need for a wildfire management and evacuation plan, including a plan to address the lack of availability and increasing costs of homeowners insurance,
– Building our first community center and public library branch for our more than 50,000 residents who are in the only area of the city without these services,
– Establishing the Gateway Preserve — over 700 acres of new open space — replacing the closed All American Asphalt plant, and
– Working with the county to reduce the impact of the Bowerman Landfill expansion, including re-routing truck traffic and eliminating out of county trash importation.
My policy issues for the city include advancement of the Great Park framework plan with an emphasis on the development of the park/open space aspects, continued support and funding for our public safety and schools and a “planning first” approach to new development.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I’m running for office to be an advocate for all residents in District 1 while giving a voice to their concerns and delivering results. District 1 has never had a councilmember who lived in their neighborhood, and this is why it took four years to address the health issues caused by the All American Asphalt plant.I have extensive experience in executive leadership during my 24 years in corporate finance and banking and was a managing director of a national business unit consisting of Fortune 500 and large private corporations in real estate and land development. I am also a city of Irvine planning commissioner. I also understand the challenges of owning and operating a small business. I have lived in the district for 23 years and worked on resident issues during this time, delivering results to improve the quality of life for the residents. I will also work collaboratively with all councilmembers to move the city of Irvine forward with an emphasis on common sense sustainability, transportation, housing affordability and support for our public safety and schools.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
John Park, Irvine City Council District 1 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Public safety: Public safety is my top priority. I’ll collaborate with police to combat retail theft, home burglaries and fentanyl intrusion. I’ll ensure school safety and champion comprehensive e-bike safety standards.Affordability: Everyday expenses have skyrocketed for everyone. I will fight for affordability, including keeping taxes low, fees down and stopping new expenses that burden residents.
District priorities include wildfire prevention, protection from environmental hazards, sustainable infrastructure, traffic mitigation, pedestrian and bike safety and developing Gateway Preserve with world-class amenities while preserving our open space.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I am a 24 year resident of my District. I am a husband and a Dad to 3 wonderful kids. I am an immigrant. I am also the product of public schools and subsidized housing. I know first hand the experiences that make up our diverse communities. Also as an Irvine Transportation Commissioner and former Irvine Finance Commission Chairman, Orange County Food Bank board member, and as founder of an award-winning business, I am uniquely qualified to serve. I have executed multi-million dollar business plans, worked with partners worldwide, and created opportunities for thousands. In the community, I have served as HOA President, supported PTAs, and I am an active Rotarian where I currently serve as the foundation President.https://irvinewatchdog.org/featured/an-early-look-at-the-2024-irvine-elections/

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Jeff Kitchen, Irvine City Council District 1 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Access to affordable entry-level housing. See above. Also, I’d like to limit absentee landlords who own properties but choose to let them sit empty. Housing is for people, and a better balance can be sought between corporate/private equity interests and those of the local population.Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: Unlike virtually every other candidate, I have real-world experience developing and deploying complex systems across the globe. I understand economic systems and technology’s role in it. I am adept at explaining complex things to lay people (even managers).
In Irvine, our diversity is our strength, and our diverse economy offers a tone of opportunity. I plan to help young people get exposure to the many start-ups and existing firms Irvine supports. Having worked with young robotics teams (high school), I know our youth has the talent to keep Irvine at the top of the economic ladder. We must figure out how to support their housing, child care and civic needs. California can not be allowed to become an adults-only state.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Jackie Kan, Irvine City Council District 1 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Irvine deserves a councilmember who will prioritize safety, thoughtful planning around housing and transportation and improvements in childcare options. In District 1, it’s essential that we engage our community in planning efforts for the future of the Gateway Preserve, an area in North Irvine undergoing transformation to an expansive open space. The most pressing need across our city is planning for more affordable and workforce housing. By keeping local control over these housing plans, I believe we can meet this need while preserving our high quality of life and protecting our cherished open spaces.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: Over the course of nearly two decades, I’ve been at the forefront of driving digital transformation within Fortune 500 companies spanning various industries. These experiences have shaped my leadership style, which is marked by a commitment to action and a foundation built on meaningful partnerships. As a mother who also works outside the home, I understand the challenges parents face in finding affordable homes and reliable childcare. When I became a mother, I was surprised to find that there are still no children’s dolls that represent Asian Americans without perpetuating outdated stereotypes. This inspired me to launch a small business of children’s dolls that celebrate AANHPI diversity.
My experience in the private sector ranges from being an entrepreneur who has started my own small business to senior positions in Fortune 500 companies, gaining extensive experience managing complex projects and budgets.
All of this provides me with a varied set of professional skills that we need more of in municipal government. Irvine is an incredibly diverse city, and we need leadership with a broad range of experience to be able to make sure that communities are getting what they need.

William Go, Irvine City Council District 2 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Delivering a world-class Great Park is the largest and most important project in District 2. I have been advocating for residents and our community at City Hall over the past two years as a member of the Great Park Development Task Force, helping to finally move the project forward. I earned a reputation as a bridge-builder and neighborhood advocate, bringing committee members together after years of delays and helping ensure broad support for the new Great Park framework plan. The vision of a world-class Great Park with community amenities, retail and spaces for all ages to come and enjoy is finally breaking ground. I was instrumental in leading task force members to unanimously support a brand new retail, food and beverage center plan to serve the Great Park, Woodbury, Cypress Village and Portola Springs. I also brought stakeholders together and delivered input from major Cultural Terrace partners coming to the Great Park that included Pretend City, Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum and OC Music & Dance.
I will continue to meet with city staff and the community to ensure the Great Park’s progress and ongoing construction continues. Our neighborhoods need a strong voice to deliver the completion of this once-in-a-generation project.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: As an immigrant who worked tirelessly to achieve success, I understand the challenges many of our residents face. My journey to become a successful business leader and community advocate is a testament to the opportunities Irvine offers — and the work we must do to ensure those opportunities are accessible to everyone.I have served on the Great Park Development Task Force, the Irvine Transportation Commission and as a longtime volunteer in our city’s aquatics programs. These roles have given me firsthand insight into the needs of our diverse community and the skills to address them. I’m not just a leader; I’m a neighbor who shares the hopes and concerns of the residents I serve.
Representing a district with a 63% Asian population, I’m committed to ensuring that every voice in our city is heard and valued. My education at UC Irvine, coupled with my experience at Broadcom, equips me to bridge the gap between our city’s rich cultural heritage and its future as a hub of innovation. I am committed to leading Irvine with integrity, inclusivity and a vision that reflects the diversity and strength of our community.

Parissa Yazdani, Irvine City Council District 2 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: I am running for this district council seat to ensure every voice is heard and to contribute to the continued growth and well-being of our neighborhoods. On the council, I would like to concentrate on the following needs in our city:– Public safety: Build trust with residents with increased accountability and encourage community involvement from local law enforcement to promote cooperation and engagement with residents. We need a multiple-pronged approach to local safety that includes funding and programs to support our first responders. Priority issues include wildfire preparedness, reducing response times and curbing gun violence.
– Small business: Dedicate portions of new commercial spaces for local small business owners. Small businesses help us develop a stronger community, and we should develop policies that help them compete within the city of Irvine.
– Responsible development: Promote smart development targeted at home ownership and affordable housing within the city. Irvine has seen tremendous growth, and we need to guide future development to preserve open space and maintain the character of our city.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: When our community was faced with a string of robberies, I and some other residents created a neighborhood watch group. When my neighbors were faced with a permanent street closure that would cause an evacuation concern in a high-risk area, I helped organize meetings with the neighbors and the city and ultimately was able to help keep the street open. When the neighborhood was faced with outside political influences, I stepped up to mobilize residents to ensure their voices were heard. Our district is primarily working families, and they deserve representation that actually hears their voices and fights to make sure the residents come first. That is why I’m running for this office.
As a local business owner and proud resident, I am not a career politician but rather a passionate advocate for our community’s interests. I am running for this council seat to ensure every voice is heard and to contribute to the continued growth and well-being of our neighborhoods. I believe that community involvement and regular people engaging in local government is vital in protecting the interests of residents, and I plan on working with all communities in the district.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Irvine faces two critical needs: addressing the environmental risks of the Bowerman Landfill expansion and enhancing community infrastructure with a world-class library in the Great Park.Firstly, the proposed expansion of the landfill poses significant health and environmental risks, including increased pollution and potential legal rights limitations for future residents. I strongly oppose this expansion and will advocate for alternative waste management solutions that protect our community’s well-being and environmental quality.
Secondly, Irvine needs a state-of-the-art library in the Great Park to serve as a central community hub. My vision is to create a library that goes beyond traditional services, incorporating high-speed internet, eBooks and green building practices to reflect Irvine’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. This library would foster lifelong learning and community engagement while showcasing environmentally responsible design.
By addressing these issues — preventing harmful landfill expansion and developing a sustainable, community-centered library — we can enhance Irvine’s quality of life and uphold our values of environmental stewardship and thoughtful planning.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: As an architect, LEED AP BD+C, and real estate broker, I bring a unique combination of expertise, vision and commitment to addressing Irvine’s challenges and representing its diverse communities effectively. My background in architecture and green building equips me to lead initiatives that prioritize sustainability and innovative design. For example, I advocate for smart waste management solutions to address the environmental concerns associated with the Bowerman Landfill expansion. Additionally, my vision for a world-class library in the Great Park reflects my commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and promoting lifelong learning.
My experience in real estate ensures that I understand the needs of various community sectors, from residents to developers. This perspective enables me to balance growth with quality of life and ensure that development benefits all neighborhoods equitably.
I am dedicated to engaging with all community groups, listening to their concerns and incorporating their input into decision-making processes. By combining my professional expertise with a genuine commitment to community engagement, I can effectively represent Irvine’s diverse population and work toward a sustainable and inclusive future.

Jeff Starke, Irvine City Council District 2 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest need that Irvine faces is a roadmap to manage our coming growth. It is unrealistic to think we can just stop all growth and keep Irvine the same for the next 20 years. We have to plan for additional housing units and their associated population growth. There are several major challenges to creating a successful plan. They are infrastructure, education and quality of life preservation.
We need to create an infrastructure plan that involves different ways of moving around the city. We will need a variety of solutions to address this challenge. We can work to expand OCTA service. We can use Irvine Connect to reach into the village areas that would not be appropriate for bus service. We can strengthen our bike infrastructure with more protected bike lanes.
There are not enough schools where most of the new housing is located. We will need to find a plan to utilize existing schools to their full potential and support IUSD when new schools are needed.
These plans should protect the current model of villages throughout Irvine. This quality of life is important to our residents.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: My family and I have lived in District 2 for almost 10 years and have thrived in this community. Diversity is something we have always embraced for our children and one of the reasons we have chosen Irvine as our home.I have been on the PTA board of my children’s elementary school for four years. On the board, I was able to bring various opinions together to find consensus leading to great solutions.
Working with diverse groups of volunteers has shown me that we are all here for a similar reason. We want a safe community with good schools where we can raise our children. We want a business environment where we have the professional opportunities for our careers to grow and succeed.
I have a strong business background which includes working for a Big 5 consulting company and as an account executive for a bank. On the side, I have owned restaurants. These many professional experiences give me the right toolkit to quickly understand the many issues I will encounter as a councilmember. My strong business acumen and ability to find solutions, along with my ability to make connections, will make me a successful councilmember.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
James Mai, Irvine City Council District 3 candidate, 2024 election qeustionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest need our city faces is finding the balance between growth and preserving what makes Irvine special. As we approach a population of over 300,000, it’s crucial to maintain our status as the safest city in the U.S. and continue providing outstanding schools and education. I frequently interact with residents, and a common theme I hear is concern about unity and the impact of growth on our community. To address this, I would work diligently to ensure that any growth is thoughtfully managed, keeping our safety, educational standards and quality of life at the forefront of decision-making.Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: For over 25 years — more than half of my life — I have had the privilege of serving as the founder and CEO of an international management consulting firm, specializing in business strategy, growth and technology. These experiences have equipped me with valuable insights and skills that I believe will benefit our community as a member of the City Council.Throughout my career, I have helped organizations navigate complex challenges and develop strategic plans that drive growth and innovation. These skills are critical for addressing the diverse issues facing our city and making informed decisions that will benefit all Irvine residents.
Beyond my business endeavors, I have also founded and operated nonprofit organizations that serve hundreds of people and have raised millions of dollars for community causes and advocated for countless causes including at-risk communities. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the power of collaboration and the importance of giving back, reinforcing my commitment to public service and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Tom Chomyn, Irvine City Council District 3 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest need Irvine faces is maintaining our high quality of life while managing growth. To address this, we need to invest in community policing to uphold our outstanding public safety record in District 3 and citywide. We must also push forward with the Great Park framework plan, ensuring it serves the community’s needs. Improving transportation is crucial, particularly as the city expands. Additionally, modernizing and refurbishing our two libraries now under full city responsibility will enhance community services. Finally, we need to reinvest in our treasured District 3 parks — Heritage Park, Deerfield Park, Harvard Athletic Park and Northwood Park — ensuring they continue to be vibrant spaces for our residents.Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: A good leader listens with both ears and talks less. Leadership involves making tough decisions and acknowledging that it’s impossible to please everyone, but I am committed to working collaboratively with my six fellow councilmembers to achieve the best outcomes for Irvine. My career has been marked by leadership roles in various projects, community services and athletic boards. One of my proudest achievements was leading the 2019 Irvine Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery petition drive as the field director. I organized over 150 volunteers to gather nearly 20,000 signatures, surpassing our goal and securing 125 acres for the Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery. We are now making progress on designing and building a 20-acre memorial on the old El Toro Marine base. This experience demonstrated my ability to unite and lead our community toward meaningful accomplishments.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Mike Carroll, Irvine City Council District 4 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Quality of life and safety is our city’s No. 1 need. We must ensure we remain the safest city in America and address property crime, which is on the rise. That means fully supporting public safety. That means stopping property crime. That means not watering down criminal laws like some have proposed. And we must not reduce funding or defund our Irvine Police Department. We need to support our men and women in blue who are on the frontlines keeping us safe. They are the reason we enjoy a safe community where we can thrive, and they work to protect us 24/7. They are a caring organization and devoted to the people of Irvine. I am the only candidate running for City Council or mayor who is endorsed by the Irvine Police Association. I am proud to have their endorsement, and I stand with them.Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: As a councilmember for the past six years, I’ve been honored to represent the most diversely integrated city in the U.S. I have track record of serving our community. I helped residents recover $100 million in unclaimed property. I obtained over $10 million from UC Irvine to pay for neighborhood traffic improvements. I’ve held 65 community forums with Irvine residents. I’ve kept Irvine America’s safest city and improved our parks to be ranked No. 11 in California and No. 10 in the country. I saved funding for seniors with mobility needs and provided buses for school children. I passed a two-year balanced city budget. I launched a $1 billion development plan that will put Irvine’s Great Park among the great public parks in the nation. If re-elected, I will continue fighting for residents by providing our police with what they need to ensure Irvine remains America’s safest city, reduce traffic by improving road design and alternative transit, enhance our parks and open space and support our Irvine public schools and families. I’ve been endorsed by many fellow residents and the Irvine Police Association, the Orange County Firefighters Association, the OC Taxpayers Association PAC, the OC Business Council and Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Ayn Craciun, Irvine City Council District 4 candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: Housing affordability: Many lifelong residents and workers in Irvine are being priced out of the housing market. The city should prioritize building more starter homes and condos for sale, rather than apartments, to give people an opportunity to own property and achieve the American dream.Traffic safety: Car crashes are the leading cause of non-disease-related injury and death in Irvine. Last year’s city budget projected that 37 people would be killed or seriously injured annually in crashes, a number projected to rise to 55 this year. Children are at higher risk than adults. Cities that have improved intersections and added protected bike lanes have achieved zero traffic deaths. Irvine should implement these proven strategies to curb speeding and increase safety for everyone.
Safe routes to school: Many newer neighborhoods are far from their designated schools, leading to more traffic and congestion. Irvine must ensure safe and accessible routes to school for all students across all grade levels.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I am running for Irvine City Council to bring community-centered solutions that improve the lives of our families and ensure city resources serve residents, not special interests. My top priorities are community health and safety, and I will maintain an open-door policy to stay connected with residents.I am the only candidate in this race who has never accepted campaign contributions from special interests with business before the city. As a volunteer, I have successfully led efforts to implement Irvine’s non-toxic landscaping policy and a school bus pilot for University High School.
Orange County ranks last among all 58 California counties in per-capita state funding, largely because many cities have not pursued available funding programs. I believe Irvine residents deserve to see more of their hard-earned tax dollars invested in our community. As a nonprofit director, I have a unique understanding of state funding programs and how to secure the resources our community deserves.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The city’s budget shortfall. The shortfall is expected to range from $10.5 million to $14 million over the next five-year period. We need to stop reckless spending until revenue improves. Businesses and Industry are the base of the revenue source for the city. Work to reopen business and industry sectors so they help improve revenue.Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: Professionally, I’ve developed project management, implementation, and communication skills from a 45-year career working for global engineering and construction company (Fluor Corporation). In both my public service and professional roles, I have a proven track record of solving problems and project execution with care and dedication.I represent the diverse communities of Irvine because I belong to a multicultural family. I am deeply rooted in the Irvine community because I originally moved here in 1969, two years before the city was founded. My wife and I are graced by God with two children who are currently enrolled in the first Charter school in Irvine. This dual-immersion school represents the diverse population of Irvine because we accept all races and needs. I serve as a Board Member at Irvine International Academy where I get first-hand experience dealing with school operations and curriculum. I live in one of the most diverse communities of Woodbridge where also serve as a Board Member for the Woodbridge Village Master Homeowners Association.

Larry Agran, Irvine mayoral candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest need facing Irvine is managing growth while maintaining our residents’ quality of life. Over-development threatens to overwhelm our infrastructure, reduce open spaces and increase traffic congestion. My approach will focus on smart growth — balancing new development with the preservation of Irvine’s character. This includes rejecting unregulated warehouse projects that bring 24/7 traffic and noise and instead promoting developments that add value to our community, such as affordable housing and enhanced public amenities.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I bring decades of experience and a proven track record of leadership that has shaped Irvine into one of the safest, most inclusive and environmentally conscious cities in the nation. I have consistently advocated for policies that reflect the values and needs of our diverse communities, from affordable housing to constitutional policing and anti-discrimination protections. Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: I think, the biggest need Irvine faces is balancing rapid growth with maintaining quality of life. As the city continues to expand, it must address the challenges of housing affordability, traffic congestion, and environmental sustainability while preserving the community’s character. To address this, I would advocate for smart growth strategies that focus on sustainable, mixed-use developments near transit hubs, reducing the need for car travel and creating walkable neighborhoods. Expanding affordable housing options is crucial to ensure that Irvine remains accessible to people of all income levels. I would work to implement inclusionary zoning policies and incentivize the development of affordable units.
Additionally, improving public transportation and infrastructure is key to reducing traffic and enhancing connectivity. I would push for investment in green energy and sustainable practices across all sectors, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of our environment.
Community engagement is essential in this process. By involving residents in planning and decision-making, we can develop solutions that reflect the diverse needs of our population. Addressing these interconnected challenges with a comprehensive, forward-thinking approach will ensure Irvine remains a thriving, inclusive city for all.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I would make a good leader because I am deeply committed to serving the community with integrity, transparency, and a collaborative spirit. My approach to leadership is rooted in listening to diverse perspectives and ensuring that all voices are heard in the decision-making process. I believe in building consensus and finding solutions that benefit the entire community, not just a select few.Representing Irvine’s diverse communities requires empathy, cultural awareness, and a genuine commitment to equity. I would actively engage with residents from all backgrounds, holding regular town halls, and creating accessible channels for feedback and dialogue. By fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, I can ensure that policies and initiatives reflect the needs of our diverse population.
My leadership style emphasizes problem-solving, innovation, and forward-thinking. I would prioritize initiatives that promote social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunity, ensuring that Irvine continues to be a place where everyone can thrive. My dedication to inclusivity and my ability to bring people together would make me an effective and responsive leader for our city.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: With great challenges comes great opportunities. Irvine will need to manage its growth in a way that preserves the high quality of life our residents expect while ensuring sustainability for future generations. To remain a city with a global profile that people admire, we must embrace forward-thinking ideas that balance the need for housing, transportation and infrastructure with protecting the environment, maintaining public safety and enhancing community services. Additionally, we must ensure Irvine continues to be a job center and economic powerhouse, and that our city remains fiscally responsible to thrive long into the future, avoiding the decline that some older cities in Orange County have faced. The biggest challenge we will face is addressing the visible increase in homelessness. This will require a compassionate yet practical approach. I am working on a program that will integrate key solutions, starting with local quality-of-life laws that will prohibit camping in public spaces to keep them safe for all residents. The program will also provide temporary and bridge housing for those at risk or currently homeless, with pathways to permanent affordable housing for those with ties to Irvine.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: I would make a strong mayor for Irvine because of my deep commitment to public service, my proven track record of getting things done and my experience connecting with and advocating for the diverse communities that make up our city. Since being elected to the City Council in 2020, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that Irvine remains a vibrant, inclusive and forward-thinking community. My leadership is rooted in a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing Irvine, from managing growth and sustainability to addressing housing affordability and public safety. I make it a priority to listen to and engage with residents from all backgrounds, ensuring that the voices of Irvine’s diverse communities are heard and reflected in city policies.
As a strong advocate for equity and inclusion, I have consistently championed initiatives that support marginalized communities, promote cultural understanding and ensure equal access to opportunities for all residents. My work on affordable housing, climate action, language access and economic development reflects my commitment to building a city where everyone can thrive.
In representing Irvine’s diverse population, I will continue to prioritize community engagement, ensuring that all residents have a seat at the table in decision-making processes. My leadership style is collaborative and inclusive, and I am dedicated to fostering unity and shared progress across our city.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Ron Scolesdang, Irvine Mayor candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest need our city faces is enhancing e-bike and road safety programs, particularly for students. Every day, I witness kids riding to school, risking serious accidents. To address this, I will prioritize a comprehensive e-bike safety initiative. This program will teach teens essential maneuvering techniques and refresh their understanding of road laws, significantly reducing accident risks. In addition, I propose that parents share accountability for their child’s safety. If a minor is found at fault in an e-bike incident, parents will bear responsibility for the consequences, emphasizing the need for active involvement in their child’s road safety education.
E-bikes are a wonderful tool for transportation, but the rising number of injuries and fatalities is alarming. As a parent, I cannot imagine the devastation of losing a child in a preventable accident. This program will be at the forefront of my agenda, ensuring every family in Irvine can feel confident about their children’s safety.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: The motto “”We Are Irvine”” is appealing, but it doesn’t fully reflect who we are today. After speaking with friends and neighbors, I’ve realized many feel disconnected from their communities, with limited interaction and familiarity. The motto suggests unity, but that sense of togetherness often feels lacking. While Irvine is meticulously planned, a city’s true identity comes from its people, and my goal is to foster unity and make Irvine a place where everyone truly belongs.I’m not a career politician — I’m a long-time resident who deeply cares about Irvine’s future. As the founder of Seniors Fight Back, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering and protecting our elderly, I’ve worked to strengthen our community. My involvement in local businesses has given me the chance to form meaningful connections and better understand the issues our residents face. My career began as a Muay Thai world champion, a title that required discipline, dedication and giving my all — qualities I will bring to my campaign and leadership.
This campaign is about giving hope and building a future for Irvine, one that values and unites all of our diverse communities. Let’s work together to protect that future.

OC Register 2024 General Election Candidate Questionnaire
Lee Sun, Irvine Mayor candidate, 2024 election questionnaire
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest need your city faces, and how would you address it?
A: The biggest needs our city faces are public safety and affordable housing. While affordable housing has been addressed in earlier responses, this response will focus on public safety.Despite Irvine being ranked as the safest city in the country for 18 consecutive years, we are witnessing a rise in retail crimes and property thefts, which significantly threaten our residents’ quality of life. A city can only thrive when its residents feel safe shopping for groceries or walking on the streets. To address this, the city must collaborate with the state, county, district attorney’s office and city police to ensure stronger enforcement, impose serious penalties and deliver real consequences for these crimes. Additionally, I will support community engagement by creating a neighborhood watch fund, allowing any resident interested in establishing a neighborhood watch in their community to apply for financial assistance.
Q: Why would you make a good leader, and how would you represent the diverse communities of your city?
A: Leadership is crucial as Irvine embarks on a new phase of growth and transformation, facing challenges in public safety, affordable housing, traffic and climate change. Our city needs a leader who listens to residents, approaches issues with a fresh perspective and remains steadfast in integrity, responsibility and transparency.I bring a unique blend of expertise and passion to the role of mayor, with dual doctorate degrees in engineering and law (Ph.D. and JD), over 20 years of experience in high-tech industries, five years on the Irvine City’s Investment Advisory Committee — including two years as the unanimously elected chair — and two terms as president of the Asian American Advocacy Alliance, where I have actively fought for minority rights and a more inclusive community.
In attending City Council meetings, two issues have stood out to me: residents’ voices are often ignored and clear solutions that would benefit the community are frequently delayed for years. As mayor, I will ensure that every public comment made during council meetings receives a response at the next meeting, fostering a more accountable and responsive City Council.
My focus as mayor will be to prioritize the needs of residents, resist special interests and drive balanced growth with more affordable housing, enhanced public safety and education; a robust economy that creates jobs; and greater transparency and responsiveness in city governance.

Running against incumbent Rigo Rodriguez, current school board president and teacher.
Brenda’s husband, Pastor Mark Lebsack, is now a pastor at Norwalk Assembly of God in Norwalk.
Supported by the PAC “Santa Ana Families for Excellence in Education, Yes on Boucher-Reyes, Lebsack and Suarez, No on Alvarez and Rodriguez for SAUSD”
The above PAC received $3,500 from Michael Harrah of Caribou Industries, a local real estate mogul and a board member of the Lincoln Club, a far-right political organization in Orange County with anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments.
Also received $1,000 from Verde Consulting (asking KM for more info)
Represented by Lysa Ray Campaign Services, which has also worked on the unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign for Travis Allen, who is considered to be "California's Trump." He has used the slogans "Take Back California" and "Make California Great Again" for his campaign. She also was the campaign treasurer for OC District Attorney Todd Spitzer, and was involved in a minor campaign finance controversy, where she took the blame for incorrectly filed financial information. And perhaps most importantly, Lysa Ray, who was compensated as a campaign strategist for this campaign, served as County Supervisor Andrew Do’s treasurer during the events that led to his current downfall and FBI investigation for financial corruption. Lysa Ray is representing anti-LGBTQ school board candidates up and down SoCal this election season.
Brenda is extremely anti-trans. She spreads misinformation about kids being indoctrinated into gender ideology and medically transitioned in public schools. She has been spreading this information FOR YEARS.
Probably the earliest example was in 2018 when new California Healthy Youth Act: Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CHYA) changes were introduced that included information on sexual relations, sexual orientation, and gender. Lebsack wrote an opinion piece for the OC Register that was picked up by EdSource.

Hillsdale College Curriculum during OUSD school board meeting when Branda was a school board member
“It’s a great program.”
In support of Orange County Classical Academy during OUSD school board meeting when Branda was a school board member
“We live in a capitalistic society to prevent corruption and education should no longer be monopolized as any other institution in this country. So that is why I am supporting the Hillsdale Charter.”
Gender
"We have books in our preschool, kindergarten, first-grade libraries telling kids that their gender can change like the weather," said parent and teacher Brenda Lebsack.
She added by encouraging the idea of gender fluidity, schools could be confusing students.
"And then if they're keeping secrets from their parents about their anxiety, that can create a mental crisis," said Lebsack.
“I have solution to the school budget dilemma. We need to take the CTA identity politics and create a salary scale that reflects their ideology. All teachers should start at the same rate regardless of of seniority or experience... for the sake of EQUITY. From that starting point, salaries should then go up or down based on level of privilege or oppression. For example: White, heterosexual, Christian males should ALWAYS be at the bottom of the pay scale. This of course could be adjusted if they change their religious affiliation, sexual orientation or gender identity. And since ethnicity is based on "perception" according to our CSBA school district policies, their "whiteness" may also have potential adjustment.
Maybe this would solve the issues of systemic racism as defined by the CTA because reparations could be built into salary schedules. And maybe it would provide incentives for people to identify in a way that is politically correct.”
“The term "undue hardship" needs to be specifically defined because people of faith are feeling like their environment is becoming more hostile due to affirming different genders. They are questioning whether, if they don't use particular pronouns citing their faith as reasoning, they will be accused of hate.
Brenda speaks on her relationship with gender in a reply to a comment to an online EdSource article:
“Andy, I can only speak for myself. When I was a child I was a tomboy. Instead of playing with barbies, I played pirates and cops and robbers. I went through a phase when I just wore motorcycle t-shirts. My parents did not make a big deal about it. I never doubted I was a girl, but deep inside I wished I was a boy, because I thought boys had more fun. I looked and acted so much like a boy sometimes, that if I was in an unfamiliar environment, I would get kicked out of the girl’s bathroom. As I grew up, I changed.
I’m still not a prissy girl, but that does not make me any less female. All I can say is, speaking for myself, these teachings would have caused me psychological damage and major confusion. As a 9 year old when I heard about female menstruation for the first time, I freaked out. It sounded like the most horrific thing in the world (and sometimes it is, LOL!).
But as a child with an immature perception, I would have thought…”If there’s a way to get out of this, then I want it! Puberty blockers or whatever it takes.” This is just me, because I know how I thought as a kid.
I’m grateful my parents just accepted me for who I was and did not put a label on me. I’m glad they did not use gender stereotypes to define me. Although I am now a wife and a mom, I still don’t fit in many of those feminine stereotypical roles, but isn’t that what accepting a person for who they are all about?”***Brenda uses this story fairly often in her speaking gigs, and has also shared this story in an article called “Like Most Kids, I Grew Out of Gender Dysphoria”.
Brenda hosted the premier of the anti-trans movie, Disconnected.
She’s also a contributor to the far-right newspaper, Epoch Times, which is ran by Falung Gong (yes, the same group behind the Shen Yun shows).
Brenda also went on the Tim Thompson Podcast this year and bragged about how she got the Suicide Prevention Hotline signs taken out of Santa Ana Unified Schools - the district she’s running to serve. Her argument was that the Suicide Prevention Hotline is connected to the Trevor Project, which she paints as something far more sinister than it is (this is connected to the conspiracy that Chaya Raychek of Libs of Tiktok was spreading at the same time as her story takes place). She employed a far-right legal firm to send a letter to the school district demanding that the signs be taken down, suggesting that the school was participating in ‘grooming’ behavior.
What she doesn’t include in her story, however, is that the signs were only removed for a few days for the school district to do their due diligence (normal operating procedure when served with legal papers), and went back up, unchanged, because of course there’s nothing wrong with the Trevor Project and providing mental health resources to students is essential.
We could go on for a long time - there’s a lot of information regarding Brenda’s anti-LGBTQ+ activism - but we’ll leave you with this.
Brenda replied to our School Board Advocacy Pledge (every candidate received one, it can be found on the Voter Guide Home Page) without a ‘yes’ or ‘no’, but did provide this answer.
“Thank you for this invitation. I have requested to meet with the OC LGBTQ+ Center Leadership more than once for open dialogue but they never respond. I have some serious concerns about our LGBTQ+ youth in our schools because I do not think our schools are safe. Is there a time we can meet and talk about these issues? I would also like some clarification because religion is just as much a legal protected characteristic as gender identity and sexual orientation. Schools must be safe for ALL students of diversity.
Thank you for this opportunity to discuss these important issues.
Sincerely, Brenda Lebsack”
We did reply, asking if she’d provide a yes or no to the pledge, and have not received a response yet. We feel her response is best considered in partnership with her other background.

Candidate for Santa Ana USD, Area 2
Progressive stances on her campaign website include:
Advocate for student representation on the board: giving students a direct voice in decisions that impact their education and school experience
Prioritize community schools: to provide comprehensive support services, addressing students’ academic, emotional, and social needs for their success.
Endorsed by:
Vicente Sarmiento, District 2 Orange County Supervisor, who has consistently voted with LGBTQ+ allyship in mind
OC Young Democrats
Chispa
Women In Leadership
California Young Democrats
California Working Families Party
OC Action
Santa Ana City Council Members: Thai Viet Phan, Benjamin Vasquez, Jessie Lopez, Johnathan Hernandez
Santa Ana USD Trustees: Dr. Rigo Rodriguez, Carolyn Torres, Dr. Alfonso Alvarez, Hector Bustos (All of these trustees voted yes on the historic move by SAUSD to be the first OC School District to fly the Pride Flag from its district office during June)
Graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2020 with a degree in Criminal Justice
Received $1,000 in campaign donations from Carolyn Torres, a SAUSD Trustee who has been a consistent LGBTQ+ ally, saying at the board meeting about her time as a teacher, “just the (pride) flag being in my classroom, behind my desk, was a cue to students that this was a safe space - and it was also a cue to students who were thinking about using homophobic slurs, or transphobic slurs, that this is not a safe space to say those kinds of things”.
“(SAUSD Faculty who want to display Pride) have to know that we’re ready to support them at the district level and the site level, and the admin needs to be ready to support those teachers as well”.
Received $1,000 in campaign donations from Hector Bustos, the openly gay SAUSD Trustee who championed the effort for the district to acknowledge Pride month and to fly the Pride flag, as well as passing a policy to protect transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming students in SAUSD. He said, “I’m committed and I know this board, this district is committed, to our LGBTQ+ students. And that’s why this (the resolution to fly the Pride flag), this resolution today, means even more than it probably would have a year ago (prior to additional policies being passed) - because I wanted to make sure that we weren’t just going to raise a flag and say, ‘well, we’ve raised the flag, we’ve done enough’ - no. We can’t just celebrate our LGBTQ+ community during the month of June. We need to do more. Because we are LGBTQ+ every single day of our lives”.
Received $150 from Charitable Ventures, a local non-profit that Pride at the Pier has partnered with.
Many of her donations are small dollar amounts, coming from educators, social workers, and working class folks (based on job titles provided).
Received a $1,500 donation from the progressive group, Women in Leadership.

Endorsed by Jorge Valdes and Tim Shaw, two OC BOE Trustees who have consistently worked against the LGBTQ+ community, including by voting to sue the state over AB 1955, the SAFETY Act.
Endorsed by far-right Nancy’s Picks, who characterized him as “is a zealous defender of parents’ rights, protecting school children, strongly believing in rights of parents to choose”.
Endorsed by the OC GOP
Endorsed by the anti-LGBTQ “Reform California”
supported by the PAC “Santa Ana Families for Excellence in Education, Yes on Boucher-Reyes, Lebsack and Suarez, No on Alvarez and Rodriguez for SAUSD”
His campaign instagram includes a post encouraging people to watch ‘Sound of Freedom”, the film that garnered heavy criticism for its characterization of human trafficking in a manner in which experts called ‘inaccurate and sensationalized’. The movie gained a cult following amongst QAnon believers and self-proclaimed “MAGA” Republicans. https://www.instagram.com/p/CuPNZwarePI/
One of his campaign promises is “(2) INVOLVE PARENTS IN REVIEWING PROPOSED CURRICULUM
I would like parents to have an open-and-honest platform where they are not prohibited and not ignored to speak their opposition to any proposed curriculum that, (from the context of their culture, tradition, and belief system), may detrimentally-impact their children's' lives for a lifetime.” Pride at the Pier recognizes this as a dog-whistle, especially in the context of the anti-LGBTQ+ activists and leaders supporting his campaign.

Dana’s income reportings for the Orange County Registrar of Voters lists her job as a “mental health counselor” (which is different than a therapist, social worker, or psychologist, needing much less education and licensing requirements in CA) for a company called “Mary’s Path”.
Mary’s Path is a “Pregnancy Care Center” organization in Orange County that focuses on teens in foster care. Its homepage explicitly states its anti-abortion mission, and it appears to be a part of the controversial “troubled teen” industry. “Many of our residents have run away from both foster homes and family homes. A very common theme is that our residents have run away for a significant amount of time and turn themselves into the authorities to receive care for themselves and their unborn child. The baby becomes the stabilizing factor.”
Per their instagram, Mary’s Path pushed hard against SB 1043, a bill that would have required state-level transparency for short-term residential therapeutic programs, asking for published information about their usage of restraints and seclusion rooms on their patients. SB 1043 did pass into law this summer, and Mary’s Path seems to be one of the programs now held to this new standard.
Dana, as a mental health counselor for Mary’s Path, does not have any information available online about her involvement in restraints or seclusion rooms used in patient treatment at Mary’s Path.

Allyson agreed to take the School Board Advocacy Pledge, saying “I will take the Advocacy Pledge. In TUSD, the LGBTQ+ community is being targeted by extremists. I can use help with canvassing and postcard writing if you have any volunteers”. (As a note, Pride at the Pier is not guiding any course of action, and are merely sharing the direct response of this candidate. This is a non-partisan voter guide, and as a 501c3, we do not endorse candidates).
During her run for the state legislature in the March Primaries, she was endorsed by the Stonewall Democrats, a leading LGBTQ+ Democrat group, saying “It’s an enormous honor to be endorsed by the @stonewalldems. As a school board member, I’ve stood for equal opportunity & safe spaces for ALL — no matter what. That focus on acceptance changes lives for the better. I'll bring the same advocacy to Congress for #CA40. Onward!”
Acknowledged AAPI Month, Pride Month, Juneteenth, and Earth Day on her instagram page:

When an organized group of anti-LGBTQ+ activists brought several dozen people to the school board meeting on 10.09.23 to push for forced outing policies, Allyson stood firmly against them.
https://www.youtube.com/live/2xhLpKFKvjc
“The one thing we can agree on, is that we all care about the well-being of our children….”
“I believe a successful child is one who learns to treat people who think, or act, or look differently than them with empathy and respect. (...) We should never make a child feel like they are unwanted in the classroom.”
“This comes down to safety. As a mother, and also as a Latina, I can’t help but think of the next school shooting, or children who commit, or attempt, suicide - and I know LGBTQ kids are more likely to commit suicide. We need to provide a safe environment for all children to succeed and live the American dream, just like I did - and we need to keep the politics out. In our community, it is okay that we do not share the same beliefs about everything. What I’d ask our community to consider is, how as parents are we creating a safe space for all of our children? How are we modeling behavior that treats everyone around us with respect, empathy, and compassion? And what are we doing as a community to work together to make sure all of our children make it to become successful, thriving adults?”
Allyson attended OUSD meetings when forced outing policies were on the agenda there, and spoke out against them, as a neighboring community’s trustee.

The OC Register asked Damikolas her views on AB 1955 and the role of parents.
OC Register: “California has a new law, set to go into effect in 2025, that prohibits districts from enforcing what’s been called parental notification policies, rules for school employees to contact parents if their child may be changing their gender identity. What do you see as the role of parents in education? Is there a limitation? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)”
Damikolas: “In Tustin Unified, we believe parent engagement is essential to each student’s academic and overall success. We all know research supports parents being actively involved and connected to their child’s school, and we want parents involved. Most recently, we have implemented a Community Schools effort in each of the district’s Title I schools, which has significantly increased parent engagement for thousands of our students who experience challenges beyond their control. As board president, I am extremely proud of this work and the difference it is making for our students and families, much of which benefit from supportive parental involvement. Each family is unique, and each student’s needs and health are unique.
At TUSD, we’re committed to understanding those unique aspects of each student and their family as we develop the communication and resources necessary for health and success. That’s been the guiding principle of all our engagement, and we’ve been able to thoughtfully navigate these conversations with students and parents for several years. That same principle will continue to direct our support and commitment to success for years to come.”

Joe has the same language on his campaign page as Mark McCallie, with anti-LGBTQ+ language.
“The TUSD Board passed a resolution to affirm that boys can play in girls sports and compete against girls. Even though the state had legislated this, the TUSD Board thought it would be a good idea to support it in Tustin, and passed a resolution upholding it. Is this what we want for our girls, being brutalized by boys on the sports fields? In the locker rooms?
The TUSD Board has done nothing to oppose the “Lie to the Parents” bill passed in Sacramento. Again, more inaction from these Board Members.” < This is in reference from AB 1955, The Safety Act, which bans forced outing policies. Portera is misrepresenting what this law does, which is in line with the narrative that California anti-LGBTQ+ activists are pushing.
Labels himself as for “Parents’ Rights”, a dog-whistle out of the far right that encompasses book bans, forced outing policies, regressive curriculum policies, and pride flag bans.

What do you see as the role of parents in education? Is there a limitation? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)”
Joe: “Parents should be considered allies until they prove otherwise. Keeping parents out of the loop should be the exception, not the rule. It is my belief that the large majority of parents love their children and have their best interests in mind.”

Married to a wealth management financial advisor, Mark Copeland, who donated $10,000 to her campaign.
The OC Register asked Copeland about her views on AB 1955 and the role of parents; “California has a new law, set to go into effect in 2025, that prohibits districts from enforcing what’s been called parental notification policies, rules for school employees to contact parents if their child may be changing their gender identity. What do you see as the role of parents in education? Is there a limitation? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)”
Copeland: “Parents are an integral part of their children’s education and should be the primary decision-makers along with their children regarding their educational path, their emotional growth and well-being, and their social development. As children develop they require the support of their parents and family, their school, and their community. If one of those elements is removed then something is missing”. -

“Even though the state legislature passed a bill permitting boys to compete in girls’ sports, this TUSD Board decided to further enable this by passing a supporting resolution. Where was the TUSD Board in protecting our girls in sports? Where was the TUSD Board in protecting our girls locker rooms, and keeping our girls from being brutalized on sports fields? Where was the pushback?
The TUSD Board has ignored the “Don’t tell Parents” Bill (Referring to AB 1955, the Safety Act, which he is facetiously referring to as the “Don’t Tell Parents” Bill, despite it NOT restricting teachers from talking to parents) that passed in Sacramento. Mark: “I strongly support parental rights. It is morally wrong and dangerous for the government to decide what parents should or should not know about their own children. Jonathan: “First and foremost, a parent’s role in education is to set expectations for their child’s behavior and effort. It’s up to parents to teach their children discipline and help them find a sense of purpose. I hope parents choose to be involved in their school, volunteering or joining the PTA. I hope that parents are engaged enough in their child’s life and empathetic enough to their development to have an awareness of their own child’s identity. As educators, it’s incumbent on us to keep kids safe. A school needs to be a safe place for students to learn about themselves as well as their coursework.”

BE AWARE: Ceci Iglesias is the founder of the “Parents’ Union” at the California Policy Center. The CPC is a very well-funded and organized, extreme anti-public education, anti-LGBTQ+ organization. They’ve been heavily involved in anti-LGBTQ+ legislative and litigation efforts across California. “Sal Tinajero, the President of the Rancho Santiago Community College District, has opted not to run for reelection in the upcoming November General Election, and has endorsed former Santa Ana City Councilwoman and former SAUSD School Board Member Ceci Iglesias for his college board seat. This is a bit surprising as Tinajero is a liberal Democrat and Iglesias is a Republican. However they have known each other for years and both served on the SAUSD School Board together.”

Iglesias founded the Parents Union at the California Policy Center:
“We believe that … Classrooms should focus on education fundamentals, not political ideology”
The Parents Union has articles about lawsuits filed in opposition to AB 1955:
“AB 1955 abrogates a parent’s rights to know what is going on with their child in school. This bill also causes school districts to violate the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) which grants parents access to information kept by educational institutions about their minor children.”

In May 2023, he responded to HB Councilwoman Moser’s agenda item in public comment. For full context, the HB City Council has an invocation before every meeting. There used to be a process with the HB interfaith community wherein different faiths would be represented via a rotating invocation speaker from within the established interfaith council, and there was no favor shown to any single faith practice. When the current council majority was elected at the end of 2022, they did away with this practice, and for the last two years only Christianity has been reflected in the invocation. Councilwoman Moser, in an attempt to ensure the council was not giving unfair credence to any one faith, put forth an agenda item suggesting that there instead be a moment of silence, rather than a dedication to a single faith.
Pano spoke on this matter, saying “I’m really troubled by this new agenda item that’s come out (...) that is seeking to fundamentally remove our invocation from our meeting, and is a time-old tradition of our city council, and to replace it with a moment of silence. Well, there’s a couple things I want to go over here. First of all, the tradition that we’ve had in our community of having an invocation - that’s really emblematic of the unity that our community has. When it comes to all the different faith backgrounds, when it comes to all the different, um speakers, and different religious figures who have come before here - it’s not just been Christians, it’s been many different faith backgrounds. And so, for us to have an item on the agenda that’s been proposed by a member on this council that very soon, most likely, is going to be trying to seek your votes for the next election - it undermines the very unity that it represents in our community. Which is for us to respect each others’ faiths and convictions. It’s not possible to be able to just say, hey, we’re just going to have you pray in your room, and that’s all you need - I mean, that’s a really dangerous form of logic right there. Because you can say, oh, you can have all the constitutional rights you want in your bedroom - well, thank you so much for giving me the right to have rights in my bedroom, I really do appreciate that, but we need to be able to have the rights to be able to express ourselves, and our faiths, in a public forum. And a moment of silence just isn’t going to do that. (...) And so really the question I have to pose to Councilwoman Moser regarding this item is, is it really about inclusivity? Your item? You know, it seems to me to be a guise of neutrality that’s really covering a form of discrimination, which is the discrimination against our people of faith. Because many residents in our community have told me, especially of the Christian faith, but of all faith backgrounds, have said, we’re concerned that our rights are being trampled on and that we’re not being heard, based on this agenda item. So, given that information, I just want to say that we as a community should be upholding the traditions that unite us. And so remember - with progress, progress is not about discarding our values. Progress is about upholding the values that allow us to best serve our community.”

News:
In a July 2021 OC Register article, Pano was photographed sitting next to Gracey Van Der Mark, prior to her 2022 election to the council, at a city council meeting. He reacts in a negatively shocked expression at then Mayor-Pro-Tem Delgleize stating that she would support the appointment of Rhonda Bolton to City Council to replace Tito Ortiz, who stepped down. In the photo, he wears a shirt emblazoned with a ‘Gracey for City Council’ message; Van Der Mark had also interviewed for the role and was hoping for the appointment.
According to this Calmatters article, Pano founded the local group, HB Patriots. The website defines the group as “HB Patriots is a 501c4 political organization dedicated to uniting Conservatives in Huntington Beach, CA. Our focus is on endorsing local candidates and actively participating in the city's politics. As a networking organization, we bring together individuals who share a common vision of promoting conservative values and principles. Join us and be part of a community that works towards a common goal of advancing conservatism in Huntington Beach”.
The article references Pano, saying, “Though he’s happy with the overall direction of the council, Frousiakis concedes that “the past few months have been getting a little bit off-track.” He established a political organization this year, the HB Patriots, and is running again for city council in 2024 with a message about getting back to local quality-of-life issues. “Unfortunately, I feel that our residents get sidelined as a result of that. I feel sidelined as a resident,” he said. “The other issues that are being talked about, that’s why I vote for president.”
